On June 24, 2026, a rare seismic doublet — a magnitude 7.2 foreshock followed just 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 mainshock — struck northern Venezuela, with epicenters near Yumare in the country’s northwest. Though centered roughly 100 km west of Caracas, the quakes devastated the coastal state of La Guaira, where officials reported that up to 80% of buildings collapsed, along with heavy damage across Caracas, Miranda, Carabobo, and Yaracuy. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced. Conventional reconstruction — engineering surveys, permitting, concrete curing — would take 18 to 36 months in normal conditions, and Venezuela’s construction supply chains remain severely constrained.
